ANSWER
MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS (SHRI RAJEN GOHAIN)
(a) The length of railway lines in terms of Route Kilometre at the time of independence in 1947 was 25170, 24153 and 5370 in Broad Gauge (BG), Meter Gauge (MG) and Narrow Gauge (NG) respectively.
(b) Since independence, laying of New Lines and Gauge Conversion from MG / NG to BG have been undertaken simultaneously and a total of 20674 Km MG and 3161 Km NG were converted into BG thereby adding 23835 Km into the BG Route Km. By laying New Lines, 12675 BG Route Km has been further added. Thus as on 31.03.2017, total BG, MG and NG Route Kilometrage is 61680, 3479 and 2209 Km, respectively.
